Auld Selkirk Toon Poem

by James Brown of Selkirk

Auld Selkirk toon's a bonnie toon,
the favoured forest queen,
the ancient haunt o' royalty,
what splendour has she seen!
The souter dreams aboot his past,
in ages far awa',
as he gangs up the new road,
or doon the 'back raw'.

In days gone by wi' Wallace Wight,
on Falkirk's deadly plain,
he focht, the bravest o' the brave,
oor freedom to maintain.
And still the Border spirit moves,
the hearts o' ane and a',
as they gang up the new road,
and doon the back raw.

Oor faithers at the 'false alarm',
sprang up and meet the foe,
and rifleman are ready yet,
to mak' as guid a show.
I like to see the volunteers,
and hear the pipers blaw,
as they come up the new road,
and doon the back raw.

What though on Flodden's fatal field,
ye got an unca' thraw,
ye've left a glorious streak o' bluid,
on istory's castle wa'.
Hand up ye're heads, my gallant lads,
ye've come frae naething sma',
as ye gang up the new road,
and doon the back raw.

Nae wonder that the stranger comes,
ilk year in siccan squads,
to wander by oor green hillsides,
the lasses and the lads.
But if they come to seek fresh air,
we'll mak' them welcome a',
as they gang up the new road,
and doon the back raw.

If ye be worrit wi' the worlt,
set bye ye're earthly ills,
gang oot and get a braith first hand,
frae heaven on Selkirk hills.
And if ye be inclined for gouf,
tak up ye're clubs an' ba',
as ye gang oot the new road,
or up the back raw.

Wi' Ettrick water for her drink,
and Yarrow for her dreams,
auld Selkirk seeks her holidays,
among her native streams.
See handin' by oor ain auld toon,
till daith shall gie's the ca',
we'll dander up the new road,
and doon the back raw.
