About Oosie Oo Handknits

My name is Fiona Mulgrew and I live in East Lothian, Scotland. I have been a hand knitter a very long time. I am mainly interested in traditional knitting and designing woollen accessories with a contemporary look to them. I use quite fine yarns. For example, the ‘spider’s web’ 1ply lace wool for lace fingerless gloves, 2ply lace Shetland wool for light weight lace scarves or 4ply 100% merino wool for a sculpted lace look neck gaiter.

What's in a name?
In the Scots language 'oosie' means fluffy, furry, having a good nap or pile and 'oo' means wool and 'oos' is woolen fluff from wool or cotton (The Concise Scots Dictionary 1991). My father who was a Fifer, used to say this tongue twister when anyone got fluff on their clothes:

E a a' oo? Pronounce as - ee a aw oo, which means - thee / ye are all wool / fluff. And if you could manage to say it, the reply was, I a a' oo pronounced as - ai a aw oo, meaning I / me am all wool / fluff *
