You will need:Cotton, cotton chintz, percale or
polycotton in the following amounts for each cushion:
20cm of each print fabric - 2 navy blue, 2 light blue and 2 mid blue
20cm white fabric
43cm plain blue fabric for the border and back
38cm lightweight polyester wadding to pad the upper side of the cushion
(optional)
38 x 38cm cushion pad
Stiff card, such as artists mounting card for the templates
Scissors and craft knife
Matching thread
Quilting needle (Betweens)
Dressmakers pen or chalk
Making the templates
Trace each of the eight templates shapes on to card. Carefully cut
them out using a sharp craft knife (do not use scissors as they may
distort the finished shape). Mark in the direction of the grain and
number each of the templates.
Preparing the patchwork
Patches
Before cutting the patches, work out how many are needed in each colour,
and cut out the border strips and cushion backs before cutting the
smaller shapes to make sure the fabric is used economically. Allow 6mm
around each patch for seams. Keep the patches separate in plastic bags labeled
with the template number.
Borders and back
From the plain fabric, cut two vertical sections 8 x 40cm and two
horizontal sections 8 x 28cm. Cut out the cushion back 45cm square, to
match the borders.
Joining the patches
With right sides together, pin and stitch the cushion covers
together in blocks, following the sequence outlined on diagram.
Joining the borders
Join the horizontal strips of the borders to the top and bottom of
the patchwork, followed by the longer vertical strips to form the
cushion sides. Press the finished patchwork.
Quilting and patchwork
If you want to quilt the patchwork, lay it wrong side down on the
wadding and baste together with large tacking stitches. Thread a
quilting needle with a toning thread and work small running stitches
along all the seam lines, starting from the centre and working outwards.
The borders can be quilted by working diagonal lines of stitches along
each section.
You can also quilt along the seam lines with your sewing machine set the
stitch length to slightly longer than normal, and sew carefully along
the seams.
Assembling the cushion
Press the two cushion pieces and with right sides facing match up
the cushion corners and pin in place. Baste and machine stitch around
the cushion edge, leaving a central opening down one side large enough
to insert the cushion pad. Turn right side out and press. Fit the pad
into the patchwork cover and ease to fit. Slipstitch the cushion closed.
