The ornaments can be made from either cotton, rayon or silk velvet - whichever you prefer. They are trimmed with a combination of braids, sequins, beads and also embroidery.You will need
Two pieces of green velvet approx 6 inches square for the Christmas
tree and two pieces 2 x 3 inches for the base of the tree
Two pieces of red or burgundy velvet approx 6 inches square for each Santa
Claus, heart, star, candle, and boot ornament
Gold and silver sequins in two sizes 3mm and 6mm in diameter
Star shaped sequins in gold and silver
Gold and silver round glass beads
Gold and silver bugle beads
Textured gold beads
Strong sewing threads to match velvet
Gold and silver embroidery threads
3mm wide gold braid
Pin cushion stuffing
Tracing paper
DMC Coton a broder, shade 948 for Santa face
Patterns
The patterns given are actual size. Trace the patterns, indicating
main decorative lines and adding 1cm seam allowances to the outer edges.
Cut out each shape twice, remembering to reverse the fabric for the
second side.
Making the ornaments
1. With right sides together, stitch around outer edge of
decorations taking a 1cm seam allowance leaving a small opening to turn
through.
2. Trim seam allowances, then clip to seams at points and curved edges.
Turn to right side and stuff. Slipstitch opening closed.
Tree
Sew tub in position on the tree. Stitch silver glass beads in a
chevron pattern. Stitch silver bugle beads, stars and large sequins as
shown. Stitch braid around outer edge of the tree, beginning and
crossing over at the base. Using gold thread embroider three vertical
lines of stem stitch down centre and around outer edge of tub.
Boot
Stitch four rows of braid around top of boot. Add bugle beads and
small gold sequins in a chevron. Stitch a row of gold glass beads to
base of boot. Stitch three small gold sequins to centre of boot. Using
gold thread and stem stitch, embroider holly leaves coming out from the
sequins.
Shooting star
Using gold thread, stitch large gold sequins and gold glass beads to
star as show. Stitch braid around outer edge of star and trail. Fill in
trail with rows of gold glass beads.
Santa Claus
Using coton a broder 948, work face in long straight stitches. With
silver thread, backstitch outline of face and sack strap, then embroider
beard and moustache with straight stitches.
Using gold thread, outline arm, toe of boot in stem stitch. Use long
straight stitches for hand
Using silver thread, stitch stars to sack, large sequins to jacket and
hat. Stitch rows of gold glass beads to hat, sleeve and hem. Define
waist with gold braid and eyes with stitches in a dark thread.
Heart
Using silver thread, stem stitch circle in heart centre, stitch
silver and gold glass beads alternately to curved lines shown on chart.
Embroider leaves in silver thread and satin stitch. Follow diagram to
add stars, large silver sequins and cluster of textured gold beads to
centre area of heart. Outline heart with row of bugle beads alternating with
small sequins.
Candle
Define base with braid, making a loop. Add extra braid and row or
gold textured beads to candle. Using gold thread, stitch bugle beads and
sequins for flame. Stitch gold stars to base, linked with two long
stitches.
