This
patchwork ball is easy to grasp, making it an ideal first toy for a child. If
you prefer to make smaller versions i.e. for the Christmas tree, insert a small
hanging loop. You will need:
25cm of 90cm wide cotton in three different colours
Suitable filling
Matching thread
Making the ball
1. Trace off both templates. Cut eight quarter circles from each of the three
fabrics. Cut four of the pointed ovals from each fabric.
2. Pin and stitch one of the oval shapes along curved edge of quarter circle shape, as shown. Pin and stitch another quarter circle to opposite curved edge of oval shape.
3. Fold so quarter circles match. Pin and stitch straight edges, leaving a central opening in one side. Turn to right side. Fill firmly. Turn in opening edges and slipstitch together.
4. Make up eleven more shapes in the same way. Place four shapes together and, using double thread, oversew securely at 'A'. Then oversew the outer edges together at points marked 'B'.
5. Oversew two more shapes together in the same way at inner points marked 'A', then join the outer points together at 'C'. Join these two sections together at 'D', as shown in the diagram.
6. Place the second set of shapes over the first set at right angles to each other. Stitch together at 'E', opposite 'D'. Sew together through all layers at the centre as well, making sure the ball is firm.
7. Slot the remaining four pieces into the shape one by one horizontally across the middle, pushing the pointed ends well into the centre. Sew together securely at each end of each piece.
