Children's Crafts - Design your own Water Garden from www.walkaboutcrafts.comCaring for your water gardens
Water does not contain the nutrients needed by plants so you must had a special plant food to it. This is available from garden centres in the form of liquid or sachets. Put it in the water where it will automatically release the nutrients when needed.
Using Cuttings
Before you make your water garden it is important to ‘root’ your cuttings – when they are cut off a plant they have no roots and these must be encouraged to grow. Cuttings take a few weeks to grow strong roots, so you must be patient. Before taking a cutting from a plant always ask an adults permission.

You will need
Cuttings
Glass container (for garden)
Glass or jam jar (for root cuttings)
Pebbles
Charcoal
Aggregate
Water
Sieve

1. To root a cutting carefully cut off the top of a healthy stem just below the point where a leaf joins it. The cutting should be about 3 - 4 inches long

2. Place the cutting in a glass of clean water. Keep the water topped up. New cuttings should have formed after 3-4 weeks
3. To make a garden first wash the aggregate – put it in a sieve and hold it under running water. Line the base of the glass container with a 1 inch deep layer of clean aggregate.

4. Place a few pebbles on top of the aggregate, then cover with a 1 inch deep layer of charcoal. The charcoal helps to stop the water going smelly, so it stays healthy for the plants.

5. Now put in enough clean aggregate to fill the container two thirds full. Using a jug, carefully pour in the water, stopping when it reaches just below the top of the aggregate.

6. Put the cutting in the glass container. Carefully trickle more clean aggregate around the roots until the container is full and the plant secure.
