Children's Crafts - Stilts from www.walkaboutcrafts.comMaking stilts

Before you start, lay some old newspapers of scrap paper onto the work surface to stop it getting dirty while you work.
You will need:

2 strong empty tins, such as treacle tins
Bottle opener
Ball of string
Paints and paintbrush or felt tips

1. Throw away the lids of the tins and wash them out. If the tins still have the labels on them, soak them in warm water until you can peel them off. Then dry the tins thoroughly.

2. Put the tins on the work surface with the open end at the bottom. Ask a grown up to help you cut a slot on each side at the top, using a bottle opener.

3. Decorate the outside of the tins using paints. Choose clear bright colours for the best effect. If you don’t want to paint the tins, cover them with paper instead.

4. To measure the length of the paper hold it around the tin, allowing an extra 1 inch (2.5 cm) for the over lap. Then lay the can down on the paper to measure the height. Draw a line along the top and cut the paper out.

5. If you have plain paper, paint or decorate it with felt tips. Then stick the paper neatly onto the tins with glue.

6. Cut two lengths of string, each should be long enough to reach from your foot to your waist and then back again. Thread the string through the slots and knot firmly on the inside of the tin.
