Basic French Knitting

1. Feed the end of the wool down through
the central hole in the dolly until it appears at the other end. Pull it
through a little way.
2. Hold the end of the wool firmly with one hand. With your other hand,
carefully wind the wool around each of the four points in turn - wind
the wool in an anticlockwise direction.
3. Take the wool behind the first point and use the needle to lift the
first loop over the wool and off the point. Repeat with the next three
points, then gently tug the end. Continue going around the four points
and after a while the knitting will start to appear at the bottom.
4. To finish off, cut the wool about 10 inches from the dolly. Thread
this end through the loop at each point. Remove from the nails, pull
tightly and knot.
Making a Snail Badge
You will need:
9 inches length of knitting (for shell)
5 inches length of knitting (for body)
Large darning needle
Scissors
Black wool
Large safety pin
1.Leave the additional wool at each end of
the longer piece of knitting (the shell) and thread a needle on to the
longest end. Coil up the knitting using small stitches to hold it in
place. Secure the end firmly.
2. Trim the ends of the shorter length pf knitting (the body). Place in
position around the shell and sew it on using the spare end of wool on
the shell. Secure the end and trim any loose threads.
3. Thread a needle with black wool and knot one end. Push the needle
through to the right side of the snails head and use single stitches one
on top of each other for the eyes. Use a longer stitch for the mouth.
Secure the end at the back.
4. To make the antennae, push the needle into one side of the snails
head and out through the other (there is no need to secure it). Trim
each woollen antenna to size. Finally sew a large safety pin to the back
of the snails shell.
