Children's Crafts - How to make Pleated Paper Jewellery

Pleated Paper Jewellery craft project from www.walkaboutcrafts.comPleated paper is particularly suited to jewellery making because the pleating adds rigidity. The pleats can be held in place with glue, or secured with rolled paper beads, ribbons and cords.

Choosing the papers -  Brightly coloured papers are a natural choice for jewellery making, and firm closely textured artists papers are ideal for pleating.
Choose papers that do not curl or mark easily. Thin papers can be used if they are doubled over or pleated with a thicker paper which will give support. Try out different designs effects before starting a design, to see whether the paper handles well and to experiment with colour schemes. The finished jewellery can be given extra durability by spraying with an acrylic fixative or a varnish suitable for paper.

Materials and equipment
Papers in a selection of colours
Jewellery findings - are the attachments - the clips, studs and pins used for making jewellery. These can be bought from craft shops and mail order suppliers.
A craft knife and metal ruler are used for marking pleats and measuring and cutting the paper.
A paper punch gives a professional finish to threaded pleats.
Adhesives for sticking the pleats together can be stick adhesive, or a pva adhesive. Transparent super glue is used to stick findings to the finished jewellery.
You will also need a pencil, eraser, scissors, set square, compass, matching ribbons and cords, and a surface to cut against.

To make a standard pleat:
Take a strip of paper and mark along edge in cm or inches desired width of pleat. Fold over, turn over paper, fold over and continue.

When strip is in a pleat use the hole punch to make either one hole at one end for a fan effect or one hole either end for vertical effect. Open up and thread through cord or ribbon to make a bracelet or necklace.

For a zig zag design:
Cut two strips of paper (different colours). Glue the strips together at right angles, then fold them over each other again and again to make a paper spring. Glue at finished end then glue ends together.

To make a bow:
Take a square piece of paper and pleat, hold in the centre and wrap a thin piece of paper round; glue in place.

All these ideas can be elaborated by using two or three different colours of paper and sizes at the same time.
