Children's Crafts - Papier Maché Jewellery Gemcraft

Children's Crafts - Papier Mache Gemcraft from www.walkaboutcrafts.comYou will need:
Apart from papers and paste for the basic papier mache you will also need:
Metal foil papers - Collect a selection of brightly coloured metal foil papers from sweet, chocolate or Easter egg wrappers. Gently smooth the foil with your fingers; remember it is quite fragile and could easily split. You can buy sheets of metal foil gift wrap, but this may have a paper backing which will need to be separated before use.
Glass gems - of various sizes and colours can be prised off old costume jewellery or bought from specialist hobby shops. Make sure that the gems have flat backs so that they are easy to glue to the card. Avoid gems with holes as these will spoil the finished effect.
Paints - Use white emulsion for the undercoat; gouache for the background colours and gold craft paint for the decoration.
Adhesives - apart from non fungicidal wallpaper paste, you will need a quick drying epoxy resin, for sticking the gems to the painted card, and stick glue for the foil paper settings.
Other items include paint brushes to apply the paint, stiff card or mounting board for the basic shapes, jewellery findings, such as clips, and polyurethane varnish to finish the item and add extra protection.

1. Cut out a piece of cardboard - the shape required for the item. Paste one layer of newspaper strips to both sides, smooth the strips around angles.

2. Allow to dry before applying another layer. Coat with white emulsion paint and leave to dry.

3. Using gouache colours, paint the front of the item. One solid colour, or stripes, work well.

4. Position the gems onto the item in a pleasing fashion. When you are happy with the pattern, stick the gems down with epoxy resin.

5. Cut the foil papers into thin strips. Put a layer of stick glue on the backs of the papers and place around the jewels, gently pleating the edges as you go. Trim any long strips with a sharp knife, if necessary.

6. Paint edges and back of item with gold or silver craft paint, dabbing dots or dashes across the background colour to create an eye catching pattern.

7. When the gold or silver paint has dried, apply a finishing coat of polyurethane varnish.

To make a mirror, stick strong wire onto the cardboard (step 1) before papier mache to reinforce it.
Glue the mirror onto the dry and painted papier mache (step 4)
For earrings - glue the findings onto the cardboard before papier mache.
