Children's Crafts - Make a Crystal Garden from www.walkaboutcrafts.comSafety First
Although the crystals listed here are virtually harmless always follow these simple rules:
Do not use crystals near food
Never put crystals in your mouth
Always wash your hands after handling crystals
It is a good idea to work under adult supervision
When you have finished, make sure to remove any remaining crystals

Crystals grow when dropped in a mixture of water and sodium silicate solution (water glass) – this can be bought at hardware shops or ordered through your chemist. There are lots of crystals to choose from – the most common are Epsom salts, cobalt nitrate, magnesium sulphate and zinc sulphate. We used Epsom salts as they can be bought at most chemists. Ask a shop assistant for advice.

You will need:
Glass container
Gravel or fish tank chippings
Sodium silicate solution (water glass)
Hot water
Epsom salts
Wooden spoon

1. Cover the bottom of the glass container with a thin layer of gravel or fish tank chippings.

2. Carefully start to pour the water glass into the container. Stop when it is half full.

3. Fill the rest of the container with hot water and stir with a wooden spoon. Try not to disturb the chippings too much.

4. Drop some of your crystals into the water, about a teaspoonful at a time. They will then begin to grow wherever they fall.

5. The crystals will continue growing for about two hours and you can add more if necessary. Try to avoid moving the container too often as the crystals break easily.
