About Bakka Design

Barbara Goodwin, Bakka Design

Welcome to Bakka design where original Scottish tapestry kits are available.
The kits concept was evolved during our stay in a remote part of the West Isles of Mainland Shetland. The designs are inspired by the varied and spectacular scenery of the North which is enhanced by the light quality. These kits are influenced by the rich tradition of patterned knitwear, the variety of natural shaded wool and the brightly coloured yarn that is grown and spun in Shetland. Their creation was for the development of a visual representation as an alternative to knitwear - for everyone to make and use.
I hope you have as much enjoyment stitching these kits as I had in designing them.
THE TAPESTRIES
These tapestries kits are produced using 100% pure Shetland wool and Fair Isle patterns. The designs are traditional and contemporary. All kits use unprinted pure cotton interlock canvas. Each design lists the number of holes to the inch canvas along with measurements of the tapestry size. Each kit is complete with:
o NEEDLE
o CANVAS UN-PRINTED
o COLOUR CHART
o PURE SHETLAND WOOL
o INSTRUCTIONS
The tapestry kits are provided with enough wool to complete the design in continental stitch or half-cross stitch. Instructions are provided.
FAIR ISLE PATTERNS
As with traditional Fair Isle knitting only two colours of yarn are used in each row and not more than five stitches worked before there is a colour change, this avoids large loops at the back of the work. This stranding provides the great warmth in the renowned Shetland knitwear.
CHARTS
The designs are worked coloured charts, each square represents one stitch and colour, one row equals a line on the chart. Often a source of concern is correctly identifying the yarn colours. First try to organise your colours, by working out which colour corresponds with which wool shade. It is important to do this in daylight. The colours have been given names relative to their shades; the natural colours are also represented by the traditional Shetland names.
